I tap my pen incessantly against my forehead, scrutinizing the words on the paper. I hate mid-term exams. I mean, honestly, what’s the point? We’ll be tested again at the end of the year on the whole curriculum anyway.

Chewing absentmindedly on the strings of my hoodie, I stare at the last question for the Chemistry test. Glancing up at the clock, and then back to my paper, then over to E.j.

I’m flustered today, and I can’t find the focus in me to pull the answer out of my brain. It’s hiding. Much like my feelings are.

The past two weeks have been hell for my head... and my heart.

After Catica won a spot at the next competition, Reed’s jealousy picked up, and he’s been handing out attention left and right. I have trouble figuring him out, and ever since he found out I have my own phone, he’s been texting and calling me every night. I hate to admit it, but I’m loving every second of his time spent on me. I still haven’t given in to being just another girl to him, and it’s driving him crazy.

E.j. sees far too much in this for him. It’s written all over his face anytime I’m around. He’s praying that I’m ignoring Reed because I’m no longer interested. Sadly, that’s far from the truth, and deep down, I think he knows that.

I play with the ring that sits in the middle of my bottom lip and sigh, scribbling down the first thing that comes to my mind. Then I turn the paper over, throwing my pen into the elastic on my ponytail and leaning back on the stiff metal chair, resting my hands in my lap, picking at my nails.

I’m lost in two worlds, two different outcomes, with two very different guys. I want desperately to figure out why I’m hellbent on screwing Reed out of my system, rather than choosing E.j., who I know is an endgame.

The bell cuts through my thoughts, and I bring my eyes back to focus on the room around me. E.j.'s stuffing his notebook into his bag, flinging it over his shoulder as he stands up, waiting for me to follow. I grab my Jansport that’s covered in various band patches—I could really use some more—and we head off to English.

E.j. slumps into his chair, and I twist around, leaning my elbow on his desk. “You all right?” I can’t help myself from prying; he’s in another world today.

“Hmm?” he hums, his eyes finding mine.

I lower my eyes half-mast to him. “You aren’t even paying attention to me.”

He lifts his glasses, pinching the bridge of his nose as he sighs. “Sorry. Had a fight with my mom this morning about the band, and I’m just over today.” His words carry a heavy sadness that I feel with ease.

“Can I ask what she said?” I whisper, the lights dimming in the room, the movie starting up. I glance over my shoulder, and the sub could not care less what we’re doing.
